A good clan name is about more than how you game, it’s about who you are as a group.

It’s an introduction, of sorts, before you even press “Start.”

The best clan names are those that acknowledge every member of your clan and capture your collective personality (or who you want to be in-game).

This makes you and your fellow clan members the best people to come up with your unique clan name.

Easier said than done, right?

If you’re trying to come up with a cool gaming clan or guild name and need a little help, check out our tips for brainstorming good clan name ideas and our list of unique clan names below for inspiration.

Best Clan Names

When you choose a clan name, you’re not going to just pull it off a list.

Hopefully.

You’re welcome to try, but you’ll probably be sharing it with someone else.

Ideally, you’re going to create a clan or guild name that is newly, truly yours.

To help you out, here are some ideas on how to create a unique clan name.

1. Know the requirements of the game or gaming system.

Before you come up with a list of names, you need to consider character limits and requirements.

Some gaming platforms allow fewer characters than others, and some have specific characters (often special characters like underscores and dashes) they won’t accept.

Know the limitations before you start to brainstorm.

2. Keep it short.

Since gaming platforms do have different character limits, keeping your clan name short is the best way to ensure it will display the way you want it to across platforms and titles.

A shorter clan name is also easier for other players to remember, allowing you to instill that extra bit of fear when they see your clan coming.

Short, punchy clan names are all the rage these days.

To create a good, short clan name, try adding prefixes and suffixes to short words to create something new.

Great Prefixes and Suffixes for Clan Names

  • Pre-
  • Post-
  • Un-
  • Dis-
  • Extra-
  • Super-
  • Mega-
  • Pro-
  • Trans-
  • Astro –
  • -able
  • -ant
  • -ious
  • -ary
  • -ex
  • -ix
  • -o or -io

Good Short Clan Names

  • Nitrix
  • Surgeant
  • Blistiary
  • Torrex
  • Unburst
  • PostRex

You can also try changing a single letter of a word to mix things up and keep clan and guild names super short.

  • Sparx (Spark)
  • Gwim (Grim)
  • Golk (Gold)
  • Blyze (Blaze)
  • Flamo (Flame)

Or try unusual spellings of common words.

  • Ki11R (Killer)
  • Pyr0 (Pyro)
  • 2rent (Torrent) – of course, with this one, other gamers might think you’re available for rent; nothing wrong with it if that’s what you’re going for

Or create a guild name with a good acronym you can use in game.

  • Killers in Disguise (KID)
  • Blast of Pain (BOP)
  • Call Your Mother (CYM)

3. Tell them who you are (as a team).

Are you badasses or jokesters? Up for a fight or down for a laugh?

Your gaming clan name will ideally convey how your team wants to be seen in-game.

Your preferred games also matter.

If you’re playing Call of Duty, you probably don’t want to name your clan the Fluffy Bunnies.

Or, hell, maybe you do. It would be funny to see the Fluffy Bunnies completely decimate the Killer Warlords or the Hounds of Hell.

More likely, though, you want a clan name that is cool or badass or both, to put the quake in your opponents’ knees and the quiver in their bowels.

Cool Clan Names

The question is, what makes a clan name cool? We can’t really say (we don’t claim the credentials), but here are a few clan names that have a real ring of badassness to them.

  • Contra3
  • Crux
  • Dart
  • Onyx
  • Luc
  • Gel

4. Put your collective personality into it.

Hand in hand with your clan name telling other teams and players who they’re dealing with is thinking about what sets you apart from those other teams.

Maybe your guild formed at school, making it sensible to use your school name (or mascot) in your guild name.

Maybe you hooked up in drama club or art class.

Once you determine where your clan members’ interests converge (outside of gaming), you’ll have a whole host of terms you could incorporate into your name that other gaming crews may not be thinking about.

Here are some examples.

Drama and Stage Terms

  • Amp
  • Aria
  • Batten
  • Boom
  • Cue
  • Cyc
  • Groundrow
  • Hum
  • Inset
  • Periactus
  • Rake
  • Rostrum
  • Scrim
  • Tripe
  • Vomitory

Art Names and Terms

  • Batik
  • Brocade
  • Canvas
  • Collage
  • De Stijl (it means The Style!)
  • Emulsion
  • Ephemera
  • Gouache
  • Hue
  • Merz
  • Muse
  • Rococo
  • Stain
  • Ziggurat
  • Dalí
  • Gogh
  • Kahlo
  • Picasso
  • Vermeer
  • Vinci

5. Look around you.

There is a lot going on in the world at any given moment, and, therefore, plenty of places to find inspiration.

Look to your favorite books. Movies. Nature. The stars.

Once you start looking, you’ll realize there are a lot of words that aren’t being widely used in gaming.

Case in point, there are over 10,000 species of birds.

And, while those birds don’t all have unique names (there are over 100 varieties of pigeon, for instance), there are a lot of names out there, many with a cool sound to them.

Bird Names

  • Antshrike
  • Batis
  • Bustard
  • Crake
  • Grebe
  • Gull
  • Magpie
  • Oriole
  • Petrel
  • Pipit
  • Puffin
  • Snipe
  • Starling
  • Swiftlet
  • Thrush
  • Warbler
  • Wax-bill

Basically, there are a lot of categories of a lot of things, and, once you get into them, you’ll find many a unique term.

6. Consider special characters carefully.

Names like S3XY (one of Tesla’s many marketing ploys) that use numbers for letters can look cool and provide an easy means of changing up short words, but they can also be hard to remember in their exact form.

That doesn’t mean they won’t be memorable if you make enough of a ruckus in-game, and I know I included a few above.

But it’s something to keep in mind.

7. Try to diverge from the pack.

While you can choose any name for your clan, even another clan’s name (unless it’s trademarked, and, yes, some clans do go to that extreme), avoid using a dupe name if you can.

If the other clan is more popular than yours (bags more wins, does more promo), you could get lost in the shuffle.

If your clan gets more attention, you risk players confusing your clan with the like-named clan.

As in a lot of things, if you can come up with something completely unique, you’re already one step ahead of the competition.

8. Expand your vocabulary.

Perhaps, the best (easiest) way to create an entirely unique clan or guild name is to start thumbing through a dictionary or thesaurus.

When it comes to naming your guild, a lot of common words are already spread pretty thin, but there are over 200,000 words in the English language alone (some of them no longer in use, which means they are even less likely to already be taken as clan names).

Add the other languages of the world to your arsenal and you have nearly endless possibilities for your clan or guild name.

9. Mix and match for a truly distinctive (and humorous) guild name.

It seems most guild and clan names stick to a singular purpose.

Either the clan is trying to sound tough and scary or playing it up for the LOLs.

Why not both? Why not be the BeBe Battalion or Death’s Kitchen?

Let ‘em smell what you’re cookin’.
